What counts as a word
A word is any run of letters or numbers between spaces, so “well-known” and “3.5” count as one word each. Chinese and Japanese text, which has no spaces, is counted by character.
Reading and speaking time
Reading time assumes 238 words a minute, the average for adults reading silently; speaking time assumes 140 words a minute, a calm presentation pace.
Questions about Word counter
Is my text uploaded to count it?
No. The counting happens in your browser tab. Nothing you type is sent to a server, and the page keeps working offline.
Does it count characters with spaces?
Yes. It shows characters with spaces, characters without spaces and bytes in UTF-8, which is what most databases and SMS limits count.
Is there a length limit?
No. It counts whole books; very long texts only depend on your device's memory.
How is reading ease calculated?
With the Flesch reading ease formula, which scores English text from 0 (hard) to 100 (easy) using sentence length and syllables per word. It is a rough guide and is meant for English.
